When most people hear the word mother, they think of their mother. But, to a cannabis cultivator this means something completely different. We’ve mentioned mothers before when talking about clones and cloning, in our article Attack of the Clones. Essentially, a mother is a plant that is grown for the primary purpose of taking clones.

You can use this method to obtain a large number or steady supply of plants which can be grown and harvested. It saves you money on not having to buy seeds, but you need all the equipment like lights and fans to keep the plant alive. This method can also save you time in the long run, because you only have to wait for the clones to root, but you don’t have to wait for a whole plant to grow from a seed.

Its always a good idea to take a clone from any plant you grow before you start to flower it. If the plant turns out male, then throw the clone away. But, if it turns out to be a female that is real sexy, which in this case would mean hairy, and has mad crystals and stinks like a skunk, then you can grow that clone and make it into a mother plant.

Instead of changing the light cycles to trick your plant into making buds, you keep the light cycle very long and just keep growing your mother plant and taking clones as you need them. You will be able to sell the clones to others who want to grow, supply yourself with clones every time you want to start a new grow, or just turn one plant into several dozen plants.
